Once in a while we meet people or find ourselves in situations that push us to the edge. Everything in us wants to deal with them or maybe just respond in ways that may not be so holy. Our response may not even be cursing them out but rather maybe just talking to them harshly. Anything out of your normal character in Christ aka the flesh is tempted to respond. However, God is calling us to remain the same in him. To not allow our emotions to dictate our character.

Being consistent in character is not a walk in the park. God knows it’s impossible to do so without Him. Difficult people give us opportunities to exercise the fruit of the spirit! Sometimes I just wonder why, but then I remember this may be an opportunity for growth and revelation of my insecurities!

How we respond to people may reveal the parts of ourselves that need transformation. It may show how we may or may not be submitting ourselves to the Holy Spirit. Also, it may reveal our understanding of self-worth.

Sometimes I ask myself: is my response to show that I am “a somebody”, that I’m knowledgeable, wise, smart, or generous? Yet in doing so pride may be shown. Scripture lets us know that our worth is found in Christ and anyone challenging that can challenge God. After understanding that, we can respond with kindness when others persecute us or consider us less then. Personally, I don’t have to even bother defending my worth. I’ve gained more freedom because I don’t bother trying to prove who I already know myself to be in Christ. Including the side of me that needs continuous work.

The word of God says, Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” Romans 12:14‭, ‬16‭-‬19 ESV

Our aim is to demonstrate the love of God and character of God. Consider others better than yourselves in humility. Ask God for extra grace to live at peace with others. Take more time to give thought to do what is right! My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry James 1:19 NIV Check those emotions and submit them to the Holy Spirit! Loving one another is not easy, but think opportunity!
