I am sure many healthcare providers hear some pretty funny things at work everyday! Today, I wanted to share something’s Occupational Therapists (OT) may hear that tug on our hearts in different ways. It’s pretty amazing how we have been boxed into arms, only activities of daily living (ADLs. i.e., bathing, dressing, etc.) when, in fact, we are so much more. We aren’t focused on helping you get a job unless you are trying to, and we can help you with that! Lol! I’ve realized how important it is to explain in detail what we really do and define OT well!

Occupational Therapists are one of the most creative problem solvers you will ever meet! Essentially, we can break down any meaningful activity into its physical, cognitive, and emotional/psychological demands and determine how best we can assist you in returning to those functions! We will address every part of you if we must to help, it’s just about us growing in our competence at times! We wake up everyday thinking and saying, “how can we help you be independent in whatever you want to do!?!?”!

Today, I just wanted you to join in our laughter and bring a little awareness with my girl and fellow OT, Ebony!

Now check out these common sayings!

  • Is this Occupational Therapy? Well, I’m retired!
  • I don’t need help getting a job.
  • My wife can help me put my clothes on. I ain’t going to do none of this when I’m home anyways.
  • I just want to learn how to walk.
  • OT in the room doing an ADL & patient states, “oh I’m just getting ready for my therapy” LOL
  • “I just finished having my Physical therapy.”
  • “That was the best physical therapy session!”
  • The patient’s about to be discharged and says, “now what’s the difference between y’all anyways?”
  • “I have to congratulate you. No one has paid this much attention to my rear end in 30 years!”
  • “You going to have me looking all nice and sexy” as OT puts on scrub clothes
  • You are making me miss Bingo!
